Alamo TMJ Relief

Neuromuscular dentistry treats more than just the teeth. It looks at the whole face, neck, head and shoulder region, and the bones, muscles, nerves and connective tissue which are related to your bite. When the bite is out of alignment, many painful symptoms can result and a neuromuscular dentist can diagnose and treat their causes. A misaligned bite is known as malocclusion.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD)

TMD is the name given to the symptoms of a misaligned bite. It’s also called Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (abbreviated as TMJ with the word syndrome understood).

There are many TMD symptoms and millions of Americans suffer from them. But many of those people are unaware that the cause of their symptoms is dental. Headaches are one of the most common symptoms. Many people see their doctors for pain relief, considering them migraine headaches. Years may pass before the dental cause of those TMD headaches is discovered and treated.

The Jaw Joint

The joint where the lower jaw meets the skull and upper jaw is a delicate one. It’s the most flexible joint in the body, as it can move not only up and down, but also from side to side and forwards and back. Between the bones of the upper and lower jaws is a cartilage disk which acts as a shock absorber and protects the bones from rubbing against each other.

When the jaw joint is healthy, the upper and lower teeth come together in a smooth and comfortable way, with a resting position about 2 mm apart.

Causes of TMD

If the teeth are out of alignment, or if there’s a problem within the joint itself, so that the jaws come together in an awkward way, tension builds up in the jaw. The muscles try to correct the bite but only become more stressed in the effort. They gradually enter a state of perpetual flexion and cease ever stretching out and relaxing. Inflammation can develop, and when that affects the nerves in the area, painful symptoms start appearing.

TMD can have non-dental causes too, such as:

  • Whiplash injuries
  • Any sudden blow or impact to the jaw joint which dislocates it
  • Long-term teeth-grinding or clenching

Neuromuscular Treatment Overview

The goal of neuromuscular treatment is to find the jaw’s relaxed position, measure and record it, and then retrain the muscles to achieve that position and/or reconstruct the teeth to achieve it. Neuromuscular dentistry uses computer modeling, sonography, electromyography, and what is known as a TENS machine (transcutaneous electrical neural stimulation) to assess the bite and diagnose its problems.

If you have chronic or periodic headaches and would like to learn whether their cause might be dental, please contact us for an initial consultation. Dr. Anderson will be glad to listen to your concerns, and answer questions, and together you can determine what might be the best step to take next. Don’t suffer that pain indefinitely, because there could well be a remedy.
